  • Nathan attends workshop on dormancy at Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences, Yale University.

  • Mahesh and Nathan conduct field research on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, supported by MSU Coastal Research and Extension Center.

  • The lab presents research at the Annual Meeting of the South Central Branch of ASM (American Society for Microbiology), hosted by Mississippi State University, at the Mill, Starkville, MS. Mahesh wins first-place poster award for the postdoc category!

  • Jenny (Secretary) and Sharna (International Student Rep) take on leadership roles in the Biology Graduate Student Association at MSU.

  • New preprint with Megan Szojka, Rachel Germain, Tad Fukami, and Lauren Shoemaker, on the role of dispersal kernels in shaping metacommunity diversity and the processes that maintain it.

  • Welcome new lab member Mahesh Chinthalapudi, as a postdoctoral researcher!

  • Nathan attended ESA 2025 in Baltimore, co-organized an oral session with Zach Miller, and presented new research on dormancy in metacommunities

  • Nathan invited to a workshop at the HJ Andrews LTER on conducting synoptic studies of the River Corridor Critical Zone, and conducts fieldwork to assess the impacts of fire on river corridors

  • Sharna and Nathan conduct fieldwork in the Mississippi Delta, at the National Warmwater Aquaculture Center, to study catfish microbiomes in collaboration with researchers from the MSU Vet School and Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture

  • Jenny and Nathan conduct fieldwork in the Florida Everglades to understand microbial communities in mangrove forests, in collaboration with researchers from Florida International University

  • New collaborative paper using long-term Cedar Creek LTER data published in Ecology Letters: Effects of Disturbance and Fertilisation on Plant Community Synchrony, Biodiversity and Stability Through Succession, with coauthors from University of Wyoming, University of Minnesota, Southern Oregon University, Oregon State University, and Union College.

2024

  • Welcome new lab members Jenny Marie Patalinghug and Sadia Nusrat Sharna, both PhD students beginning Fall 2024!

  • TJ Singh wins travel awards to attend ESA from the Honors Undergraduate Research Program in the Shackouls Honors College and the College of Arts & Sciences Student First Undergraduate Excellence

  • New preprint on short- and long-term synchrony dynamics with colleagues from Univ of Wyoming and Univ of Minnesota

  • Lab will attend ESA 2024 in Long Beach, CA: Nathan will give a talk on dormancy in metacommunities; undergraduate researcher Tajinder Singh will present a poster on terrestrial-aquatic linkages and microbial community dynamics

  • Undergraduate Tajinder Singh presents research at the MSU Biology Undergraduate Research Program 15th Annual Symposium and wins 1st place award for best presentation! Nathan receives “First Place Mentor Award”.

  • Nathan attends All Hands Meeting at Jackson State University to discuss federally funded MBRACE research

  • New publication in Environmental Microbiology: “Environmental filtering governs consistent vertical zonation in sedimentary microbial communities across disconnected mountain lakes” with collaborators from the University of Wyoming
